The origin of the word “travel” is most likely lost to history. The term “travel” may originate from the Old French word travail.[3] According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, the first known use of the word travel was in the 14th century. It also states that the word comes from Middle English travailen, travelen (which means to torment, labor, strive, journey) and earlier from Old French travailler (which means to work strenuously, toil).

In English we still occasionally use the words travail and travails, which mean struggle. According to Simon Winchester in his book The Best Travelers’ Tales (2004), the words travel and travail both share an even more ancient root: a Roman instrument of torture called the tripalium (in Latin it means “three stakes”, as in to impale). This link reflects the extreme difficulty of travel in ancient times.

This beautiful space is within walking distance to all the great spots. We took the subway the first day and then walked all over the other days. The beds are very comfortable. The living area was perfect for the four of us. The courtyard makes you feel like you are in an oasis away from everything. Albi was very friendly and welcoming.

Albi's apartment is fantastic. It's got so much room, which is great for several adults who don't want to be on top of each other. The location is phenomenal. So close to everything. Highly recommend!

We had a fantasic stay at Albi's place in Vienna. It was well furnished and very quiet, and within walking distance of some of the best Christmas markets and restaurants! The apartment is also across the road from a train stop, so super easy to get around the city. Albi was really helpful and responsive. We would definitely stay again. Thanks Albi 😊
